The image processing is very fast, astonishingly fast. That said I hated to see the UI change. Luckily the great team at Photoshop does not try to reinvent the UI every time. With version CS5 the UI is rendered clean and super fast, for example. Of course, the actual interface changed in essence quite a bit. Be it by using layer styles, adjustment layers or apply changes, the layers of course are somehow connected. Maybe in the future (end of version?) it will be a completely different way, but it does makes sense that the applications use more common and user-friendly concepts.
