Biggest Job Interview Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

The journey from job application to selection is rather a gruesome one. And while the application remains to be head-start, getting an interview is a glorified opportunity in itself. However, with some minor yet significant errors, more often than not candidates blow out their chance to get their dream job.

1. Time management

Arriving late for an interview leaves an imprint of recklessness that stays for a long period of time. It shows a disrespect towards an interviewer and your lack of interest in the company. To avoid being late, it is recommended to arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled time. However, arriving way too early, i.e. – 30 minutes prior, disrupts the comfort of an interviewer. Run some calculations and make sure you arrive before or on time, but never late for an interview.

2. Being unprepared

We live in an era where information could be availed at the tips of fingerprint without going an extra mile for it. Your unpreparedness for an interview shows your indifference and disregard towards company. Research about the company on various online portals and get a clear understanding of what you would be getting into. Only when you would be aware about the company could you talk about your skills and expertise in context. With a thorough research you would be prepared to answer the standard and unexpected questions in an interview with calm demeanour.

3. Inappropriate dressing

And while clothing is just a part of person personality, it also facilitates in creating a long and lasting first impression. You don’t want to come across as disordered with dishevelled appearance. It is important to put together a well-dressed look, no matter the position or organization you’re applying. After all, you would want your first impression to be polished and professional.

4. Body posture

Your body language says a lot about your personality. An inappropriate body gestures could be a huge opportunity crasher. A firm handshake often makes a remarkable impression as opposed to limp handshake. Body language is an outlay of your confidence. And while an eye contact determines your confidence in self, start on a good note with a generous and warm smile. It’s okay to be nervous but don’t let your nervousness lead you to fidgeting.

5. Glorifying your weaknesses

And while you would be tempted to offer a cliche answer to your weaknesses, an interviewer is more interested in genuine answer. More often than not this question is asked to check the level of self-awareness of a candidate. Carry out an excruciating task of introspection and curate a list of your weaknesses and how could you overcome them.

6. Not asking questions

Always remember that a communication is a two way process. When presented with an opportunity to ask any questions, the candidate is expected to bring some queries. This showcases the candidates’ interest in company as well as an interview. Avoiding this question for either reason of fear or boredom is not advisable. There is a common notion that says no question equals no interest. Your research would come to rescue at this point and you could use this opportunity to ask smart questions.

7. Rambling and Lying

The greatest of the blunder would be to ramble and ramble with insignificant details and to bore an interviewer. Also, just because you don’t have enough to talk don’t take a path of lying. It is one of the greatest deal breaker and would land you in an awkward situation.

8. No actions on follow up.

Your interview does not end in an interview room. Instead, an individual is expected to contact within 24 hours through mail or call to conduct a follow back. A well drafted E-mail would never be missed and would create an impression of sincerity amongst an interviewers.
