The staff is friendly and professional, and the karaoke nights have become legends.

Cotton Club

The Cotton Club is a popular club in New York City, especially for hipsters who are super trendy. It is situated in a massive warehouse with an open area that allows musicians to perform each week.

The club was founded in 1920 by Jack Johnson, a heavyweight boxing champion. He was a tenant on the upper floors the building that was located at the intersection of 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue Harlem. He christened the establishment “Club Deluxe.” In 1923, Owney Madden, disco Teche a white prominent bootlegger, and gangster from England, took over the club and changed the name to “The Cotton Club.”

Initially, black people could not go to the club, but it featured many of the most famous entertainers of the time including musicians Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford, Chick Webb, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Fats Waller; vocalists Adelaide Hall, Ethel Waters, Cab Calloway, Bessie Smith, Aida Ward, Avon Long, the Dandridge Sisters, the Will Vodery Choir, Nina Mae McKinney, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne and dancers Katherine Dunham, disco teche 2023 Bill Robinson The Nicholas Brothers, Charles ‘Honi’ Coles, Leonard Reed, Stepin Fetchit, and Earl Snakehips Tucker.

The Cotton Club was temporarily closed in 1936 after an unrest in the race scene broke out in Harlem. It was reopened at Broadway and 48th Street. The club’s owners believed that the Cotton Club would succeed in the new location.

However, the Cotton Club had a long history of segregation policies and discriminatory practices. Carl Van Vechten, a photographer who frequented the Cotton Club, pledged to stop attending the club until racist policies were changed.

When a contract was signed to move the Cotton Club to another location its segregation policy was changed, and the club became more accessible to black patrons. The Cotton Club featured some of the most popular entertainers of the time and was a place to meet for young blacks in New York City.

The Cotton Club was famous for its musical revues , dancing comedy, variety acts, comedy and a house band. The music at the Cotton Club was jazz, and many of the performers started their careers there. The Cotton Club hosted many artists including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Cab Calloway. Other members included Dorothy Dandridge and Coleman Hawkins.
