‘Strong amazing women like my mum.She did the fundamental thing, she said she wanted me to be happy and she meant it.

‘I had unconditional love in absolute bucketfuls and belief. Women who were proud of my achievements but above all thought that it mattered most that I was was kind – and they taught me how to hear and to listen,’ he replied.

Continuing on a poignant note, Robert said: ‘The centre of that was my grandma who died at the weekend.She was 97. So she was the kind of spiritual and emotional epicentre of our family.’

Lottie lived through The Second World War, an experience which her grandson said ‘very few of us’ have the capacity to understand.   

‘She went through a trauma that only a few of us have the capacity to understand but she didn’t have a day of bitterness or unkindness.She just wanted us to be happy.

‘To think she’s not with us leaves us empty but to have had her fills us with joy,’ he reflected.

Over the weekend, the presenter also marked his grandmother’s life, sharing a black-and-white image accompanied by a moving caption with his Instagram followers.

‘My Grandma Lottie was born 97 years ago, working fearlessly through the bombs of the Blitz.She died this morning without a day of complaint or bitterness. Her generation defeated tyranny, safeguarding freedom for us all.

‘We must never forget their sacrifice! #RemembranceDay2021,’ he wrote.
