Plants Near Cedar Hedge

Vetivert8, what a pleasing surprise to receive your response, thanks so much. I had given up on anybody responding, but I believe I did not clearly clarify the situation. This ‘factor’ is a hedge by virtue of its being a row of cedars. It has never been trimmed or formed into a real hedge and once we moved here the trees were already over 20 ft tall. I’ve reclaimed this 4-foot space by trimming all the decrease branches of the cedars for a peak of about six ft. I did get into exhausting wooden so there will be no new growth both vertically or horizontally. A couple of weeks ago my neighbour on the alternative side of the hedge did the same on their aspect. We are now left a sequence of six-foot posts dividing the properties. So use of it as an entrance will not be an option, and therefore the arches could be inappropriate. I posted my question on one other site and it was suggested that I make it a hosta backyard with another shade perennials interspersed, and I’m thinking of going that route.
