How to properly initialize a NSObject with a non primitive type?

I’m having some trouble trying to use the pattern suggested in the Apple docs (Initializing Objects). I’m trying to initialize an object with a NSString. The following works fine:
CellObject *cellObject = [[[CellObject alloc] init] autorelease];
[cellObject setCellIndex: cellIndex];

But if I try to do the same with a non-primitive type, it doesn’t work:
CellObject *cellObject = [[[CellObject alloc] init] autorelease];
[cellObject setCellIndex: [NSNumber numberWithInt: cellIndex]];

The only way I found to make it work is:
CellObject *cellObject = [[[CellObject alloc] initWithCellIndex: cellIndex] autorelease];

However, even when I don’t release it, I’m not sure it’s always the correct thing to do, so I’d like to know if there’s any way to initialize an object with a non-primitive type using the “initialize” pattern.

No, you don’t need to, and you shouldn’t, that’s not the point of the init/autorelease pattern.
The idea of init is to create the class instance when its properties are set and autorelease does exactly that, it releases (automatically) any memory allocated when the object was created. So in your case there is no need for autorelease to free any memory – when you alloc/init a new object it already has the memory to hold all its properties and the alloc method does not release any memory – in fact it allocates one more object for you, as stated here
object alloc is void, read: allocates memory
So in your first example
CellObject *cellObject = [[[CellObject alloc] init] autorelease];

is equal to
CellObject *cellObject = [CellObject alloc];
[cellObject init];
[cellObject release];

as you see now, a cellObject is allocated and is released only after init() is called. So the second version is a way to instantiate a CellObject object and get access to
