Why do women live longer than men?

Everywhere in the world women live longer than men – but this was not always the case. The available data from rich countries shows that women didn’t live longer than men in the 19th century. What makes women live much longer than men today, and why has this advantage increased in the past? The evidence isn’t conclusive and we only have partial solutions. We know there are biological, psychological and environmental variables which play a significant role in women living longer than men, Glorynote.com/%D8%B5%D8%A8%D8%BA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B4%D8%B9%D8%B1-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B3%D9%88%D8%AF/ – despensafamiliar.com – we don’t know what percentage each factor plays in.

We have learned that women live longer than men, regardless of their weight. But this isn’t due to the fact that certain biological or non-biological factors have changed. The factors changing are numerous. Some are well known and relatively straightforward, like the fact that men smoke more often. Some are more complex. For example, there is evidence that in rich countries the female advantage increased in part because infectious diseases used to affect women disproportionately a century ago, so advances in medicine that reduced the long-term health burden from infectious diseases, especially for survivors, ended up raising women’s longevity disproportionately.

The first chart below shows life expectancy at birth for men and women. As we can see, every country is above the diagonal parity line – this means that in all countries a newborn girl can expect to live for longer than a new boy.1

It is interesting to note that the advantage of women exists everywhere, the difference between countries is huge. In Russia, women live for 10 years longer than males. In Bhutan the difference is just half a year.

Let’s look at the way that female advantages in terms of longevity has changed over time. The next chart compares the male and female lifespans at birth in the US from 1790 to 2014. Two things stand out.

The first is that there is an upward trend. Women and men in America have longer lives than they did a century ago. This is in line with historical increases in life expectancy everywhere in the world.

There is a widening gap: The female advantage in terms of life expectancy used to be extremely small, but it grew substantially during the last century.

If you select the option “Change country’ on the chart, you can verify that these two points are also applicable to other countries with available information: Sweden, France and the UK.
